Spring 2003 Lectureship Schedule
Sherwood G. Lingenfelter serves as Provost and Senior Vice President of Fuller Theological
Seminary, the largest multi-denominational seminary in the world. Prior to his appointment
as provost and senior vice president, Dr. Lingenfelter served Fuller as Dean of the School
of World Mission and Professor of Anthropology.
Sherwood Lingenfelter earned a B.A. from Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, in 1963,
with a major in English Literature. From Wheaton he continued his education at the University
of Pittsburgh where he studied cultural Anthropology and earned his Ph.D. in 1971. Sherwood
and his wife, Judith, collected their doctoral dissertation research on Yap in the Western
Caroline Islands, learning the Yapese language and conducting more than three years of
field research over a ten-year period.

An active person in missions, Dr. Lingenfelter has studied with short-term research projects
with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in Brazil, Cameroon, and Suriname. He has
also served as consultant to SIL in Papua New Guinea, Borneo, Philippines, Africa, and Latin
America. Dr. Lingenfelter was the consultant and lecturer to the Summer Institute for Program
development in Brazil and England and has conducted workshops for Wycliffe Bible Translators
and (SIL) in twelve different countries.
In addition to his shorter team research projects, Dr. Lingenfelter has published several
books concerning missions. His recent books include Agents of Transformation: A Guide
for Effective Cross-Cultural Ministry, Transforming Culture: A Challenge for Christian
Mission, and Ministering Cross-Culturally. He has also contributed work on the subject
of “Developing indigenous leaders,” “Understanding social organization
for translation and church planting ministries,” and “Out of cultural bias:
pilgrim life-styles for cross-cultural ministry.”

Prior to arriving at Fuller, Dr. Lingenfelter served as Professor of Intercultural Studies
(1983-1999) and provost and senior vice president (1988-1999) at Biola University, in La
Mirada, California. He also served as a professor of anthropology for fifteen years in the
State University of New York at Brockport.
In addition to his vast academic career, Dr. Lingenfelter has contributed directly to
the life of the church. He was licensed as an elder in the Fellowship of Brethren Churches
in 1962. Dr. Lingenfelter then served two years as district missions pastor in Asbury
Hills, Illinois, and then as Assistant Pastor in the First Brethren Church of W. Kittanning,
Pennsylvania. His most recent church ministries include serving as an elder at Bellflower
Brethren Church in California. In 1993, he was elected to serve as a member of the Board
of Grace Brethren Foreign Missions.
